The seam inside your jersey or bib shorts is easy to ignore until it starts leaving a line on your skin halfway through a humid ride. Then it becomes the only thing you can think about. In the flatlock versus bonded seams discussion, neither construction is automatically better. They solve slightly different problems, and the right choice depends on where the seam sits, how the garment fits, and how you ride.
A well-made cycling garment is not just fabric and a chamois. Its panels must stretch with you, stay stable when you are bent over the bars, manage sweat, and survive plenty of washing. Seams are part of that job. They can affect comfort, airflow, stretch, appearance and long-term durability - sometimes more than the marketing label suggests.
What a flatlock seam actually does
A flatlock seam joins two pieces of fabric edge to edge rather than layering one fabric over another. The sewing machine trims and interlocks the edges, creating a seam that lies relatively flat against the body. You will often recognise it by the visible lines of stitching on both sides of the garment.
This is a familiar construction in cycling shorts, jerseys, base layers and many types of sportswear. Its main advantage is simple: less bulk than a conventional overlapping seam. When a seam sits close to the skin, especially around the thighs, shoulders or underarms, reducing bulk can make a real difference over several hours.
Flatlock seams also offer useful mechanical strength. They are sewn with thread, so the connection between panels is clear and predictable. On fabrics with good stretch, a well-executed flatlock seam can move comfortably with the garment without feeling stiff or restrictive.
That does not mean every flatlock seam feels identical. Thread type, stitch density, tension, fabric thickness and panel alignment all matter. A poorly balanced flatlock seam can still feel raised, become wavy after washing, or pull at the fabric when stretched. The name tells you the construction type, not the quality of the finished garment.
How bonded seams work
Bonded seams use heat, pressure and an adhesive film or tape to join fabric panels. Instead of visible rows of stitching, the seam may look clean and almost flush with the fabric. On a close-fitting jersey or trisuit, this can create a very smooth finish.
The appeal is obvious. With no sewing thread running along the join, a bonded seam can be exceptionally low-profile. It can also reduce the amount of material at the seam, which is useful where every bit of bulk is noticeable, such as a sleeve hem, collar, leg opening or a panel that sits directly against the body.
Bonding can also allow a garment to look neater and more minimal. But looks are not the whole story. A bonded seam relies on the adhesive being compatible with the fabric, stretch level and expected washing conditions. When those ingredients are right, it can perform very well. When they are not, the edge may begin to lift or separate over time.
This is why bonded construction needs careful development. In our experience testing samples, a bonded edge that looks excellent on a hanger can behave differently after repeated stretching, sweat, rain, detergent and heat. Cycling apparel gets a harder life than a showroom sample. It is pulled on, ridden in, washed, dried and pulled on again - often while everyone is trying to get out before the weather turns properly brutal.
Flatlock versus bonded seams for cycling comfort
For comfort, seam placement is usually more important than the headline construction. A flatlock seam placed away from high-friction zones may be completely unnoticeable. A bonded seam placed across an area that needs lots of stretch can feel less forgiving if the adhesive tape is too firm.
On bib shorts, seams around the chamois and inner thigh deserve particular attention. These areas move constantly and are exposed to saddle contact. Flatlock construction is commonly used here because it can provide a flexible, durable join without a thick ridge. The quality of the chamois, the shape of the panels and the fit of the shorts still matter more than choosing a garment simply because it says “bonded”. No seam technology can rescue a short that is the wrong size or whose chamois does not suit your riding position.
On jerseys, bonded seams often make the most sense at hems, sleeve ends and collars. These are places where a clean edge can sit neatly against the body and reduce the feeling of extra layers. A bonded sleeve hem, for example, can feel light and tidy without the need for a wide band of stitching.
For triathlon apparel, the case for low-profile construction can be stronger. A trisuit needs to be comfortable across swimming, cycling and running, so reducing bulk in selected areas is useful. Still, the garment must stretch freely and remain dependable through repeated use. The most suitable construction is often a mix of both methods rather than one used everywhere.
Heat and humidity change the equation
In Singapore and across Southeast Asia, kit spends a lot of time wet with sweat, rain, or both. That makes comfort around seams more noticeable. Damp fabric can cling more closely to the skin, and any raised or badly positioned seam is more likely to make itself known on a long ride.
Bonded seams are sometimes described as more breathable because they can remove rows of thread and reduce seam bulk. That may be true in a small, localised sense, but it is not the main factor deciding whether a jersey feels cool. Fabric weight, knit structure, ventilation panels, fit and airflow have a much bigger effect on how quickly you feel heat building up.
Flatlock seams are not automatically hotter, either. The added thread is small compared with the total garment. A breathable jersey with sensible panel placement and flatlock seams can be a better choice for humid riding than a poorly designed bonded jersey made from heavy fabric.
Think of bonded seams as a refinement, not a shortcut to cooler kit. They can improve the feel of the right garment, but they cannot replace good fabric and thoughtful patterning.
Durability is more than a seam test
People often assume stitching is always stronger because it is visible and familiar. In many high-stress areas, that is a fair instinct. A properly sewn flatlock seam can handle repeated stretching very well, and it is generally less sensitive to high drying temperatures than adhesive bonding.
But bonded seams are not fragile by definition. Quality adhesive films are designed for stretch and laundering. The problem is that bonding has less room for shortcuts. Adhesive choice, bonding temperature, pressure, fabric treatment and curing time all need to be right. If one part of the process is off, separation can show up early.
Care also plays a role. Wash cycling kit after use, turn it inside out, use a mild detergent and avoid fabric softener. More importantly for bonded edges, avoid high heat from tumble dryers and do not leave kit baking in a hot car or direct sun for longer than necessary. Heat is useful during manufacturing; uncontrolled heat later is less helpful.
If a bonded edge starts lifting slightly, do not assume the whole garment is finished. The location matters. A small cosmetic lift on a sleeve edge is different from separation at a structural panel join. Either way, it is worth checking before it grows into a bigger issue.
Which should you choose?
Choose based on the garment and the riding use, not on which word sounds more premium. Flatlock seams are a sensible choice when you want reliable stretch, durable construction and low-bulk comfort across large moving panels. They are especially at home in bib shorts and areas that need to flex repeatedly.
Bonded seams are useful where an exceptionally clean edge, reduced bulk or a close-to-skin finish improves the garment. Sleeve hems, leg grippers, collars and selected jersey panels are common examples. They can feel excellent, but they should be executed well and cared for sensibly.
The strongest garments often combine the two. That is not a compromise. It is good product design: use flatlock where movement and dependable strength matter most, and use bonding where a clean, low-profile edge earns its place.
When trying kit on, do not just inspect the seams with your eyes. Pull the fabric gently, raise your arms, bend into your riding position and notice whether any edge feels tight or prominent. The best seam is usually the one you forget exists after the first few kilometres - leaving you free to enjoy the ride, complain about the humidity, and save your attention for more interesting things.
